Seol(or the Korean New Year), the first seasonal holiday of a lunar new year has a meaning of wishing for a prosperous harvest and family wellbeing throughout the year. On New Year's morning, family members wear seolbim (New Year’s dress) and perform charye, a ceremonial rite to honor one’s deceased ancestors. To one’s living elders, deep bows called saebae, are made. In response, the senior family members deliver their wishes for good fortune, deokdam to the younger ones. Tteokguk (or rice cake soup), is served to all family members as a special meal for seol, since Koreans believe that people grow a year older only after they have consumed a bowl of rice cake soup on New Year’s day. Also, people celebrate seol by playing various traditional games such as yutnori (a board game), ssangnyuk (a dice game) and yeonnalligi (a kite flying).
