2016 Jeongwol Daeboreum Festival Jeongwol Daeboreum (Jan.15th on the lunar calendar) is the Korean holiday when a great, full moon rises for the first time on the lunar year. Korean who have agricultural tradition wish for a rich harvest at Jeongwol Daeboreum performing a variety of rituals and games. Such traditional seasonal rites for praying for a good crop and health and preventing evil include biting nuts (bureomkaemulgi), drinking ear-sharpening wine (guibalgisul), eating steamed dried vegetables harvested in the last year (namul) and leaf vegetable-wrapped steamed rice for luck (bokssam), eating steamed rice with five grains (ogokbab), eating medicinal steamed rice (yakbab), selling summer heat (deowuipari), flying kites for preventing evil (akmagiyeonnaligi), fire playing (jwibulnori), etc.
On the Lunar New Year’s Day, Korean perform traditional seasonal rites for wishing for the security of an individual and family. Otherwise, on Jeongwol Daeboreum, they perform ancestor memorial services for the village as well as community, conduct treading down the earth ghost (jisinbapgi), etc. and play diverse cooperative games that invite many people in the community including tug of wars (juldarigi), rice straw chariot of battle (chajeonnori), stepping on a bridge (daribapgi), stacking rice straw (byeotgaridaeseugi), etc.
