Dano, also called Surit-nal, is a Korean traditional holiday that falls on the 5th day of the fifth month of the lunar Korean calendar. The word Surit harks back to suri, meaning "wheel," which is why the rice cakes made of surichwi, plant grown in the mountains or mugwort were marked with a wheel pattern. According to ancient records, people washed their bodies, dressed up in their best, and had a seasonal food to spend a healthy summer preventing from a summer heat and bad things.
In the court, royal subjects gave poetry books for a king and the king presented fans to them for their pains. Traditionally, women washed their hair in water boiled with sweet flag(changpo), believed to make their hair shiny and people posted amulets on the column to ward off evil spirits. Special events include wrestling matches for men and swinging for all the people clad in beautiful clothes. In addition, mask dance used to be popular among people, who enjoyed a festive holiday.
