Paying tribute to prof. Kim Hak-chu, a senior sinologist for donating 280 Chinese masks and cerebrating the 10th anniversary of Korea-China diplomatic ties, the National Folk Museum of Korea prepares an exhibition entitled "Chinese Masks, An Expression of the Spirit and Movement of the Body donated by Prof. Kim Hak-chu". The exhibition is arranged in six parts. The introductory part presents the origin of Chinese masks through the ancient relics constantly excavated in China today. The first part “The Play and Masks" presents mask plays conducted in each region. The second part “Seasonal Customs and Masks" will be displayed with masks used on big holidays such as New Year's Day, thanksgiving day, and torch festival, which falls on the 24th day of the sixth Moon. The third part “Life and Masks" depicts the relation between Chinese life cycle and masks via masks appeared in the rites of coming-of-age, marriage, and funerals. The fourth part “Religion and Masks" demonstrates masks employed in each religion event, which are believed to be messengers able to communicate human with the gods in heaven. The fifth part “Interesting Masks of Korea and China" presents the similarity and difference of Korean and Chinese cultures through the comparison of Korean and Chinese masks. We hope to facilitate the cultural exchange between Korea and China with this exhibition as a turning point and would like to express our heartfelt thanks to Prof. Kim Hak-chu for donating his valuable collection.
