"Samiljeol," or March 1st or Samil Movement Day in English, commemorates the resistance movement that rose up against the Japanese occupation of Korea on March 1, 1919. As one of Korea’s four major national commemorative days, Samil Movement Day encourages unity among Koreans and fosters a patriotic spirit inspired by the spirit of independence of March 1, 1919.
As specified in the Preamble of the Constitution of the Republic of Korea [We, the people of Korea, proud of the resplendent history and traditions dating from time immemorial, hereby uphold the cause of the Provisional Republic of Korea Government born of the March First Independence Movement of 1919…], the March 1st Movement holds great significance in the history of the Korean independence movement. |
