Ipchu (立秋), Onset of Fall
"Ipchu" (立秋), which means "the onset of fall," is the thirteenth season of the twenty-four seasonal sub-divisions, or solar terms, of the lunar calendar. The day falls in the seventh month of the lunar calendar or on around August 8 of the solar calendar. The season announces the onset of fall, so the period lasting from this day until "Ipdong" (立冬) is counted as autumn in Korea.
The time around "Ipchu" is when the rice ripens, so lasting clear weather is considered to be ideal. During the Joseon dynasty, the "Gicheongje" (祈晴祭) ritual was performed to ask the gods to stop the rain if it lasted for more than five days. |
