Introduction | "Baengno" (白露) is one of two seasons, the other being "Chubun" (秋分), that fall in the eighth month of the lunar calendar. The season includes Korea's most important holiday, "Chuseok" (秋夕), or Korean Thanksgiving Day. | ||||
Baengno (白露), White Dew
"Baengno," which literally means "white dew," is the season when the nighttime temperature drops, resulting in the formation of morning dew, and the first signs of autumn can be felt. It is also the season when the monsoon is at an end and the clear sky continues, and the crops are ripe in the paddies and fields. In the Jeolla and Jeju regions, "Baengno" arrives sooner than elsewhere in Korea, and when it fell in the seventh month of the lunar calendar, it was believed that cucumbers would grow well. In Jeollanam-doregion, if frost fell before "Baengno," the season would be bad, while windy weather around Baengno would be particularly bad for rice farming. Conversely, rainfall around the same time would bring such a bonanza year in Gyeongsang province that farmers used to say, "If it rains on Baengno in August, the rice will add up to thousands." |
