"Sanggang" (霜降), which means "fall of the frost," falls in the ninth month of the lunar calendar. It is one of the twenty-four seasonal sub-divisions, or solar terms, on the lunar calendar. It is the season when the first frost of autumn falls, usually around October 23 of the solar calendar. Around this time, while the clear autumnal weather continues during the day, at night the temperature dips below freezing. Water vapor in the air can freeze to form frost, and the ground temperature can drop even lower to form the year’s first ice.
At this time, around late autumn, the fall foliage reaches its peak and chrysanthemums are in full bloom. During the Joseon dynasty, on "Sanggang," the government performed the national ceremony known as "Dukje" (纛祭), in which the Grand Flagpole was placed in front of a royal or military procession. In an ancient journal titled Choganseonsaengmunjip (草澗先生文集), the Joseon dynasty scholar Gwon Mun-hae (權文海) wrote about the scenery on "Sanggang": "As frost from the night before has fallen all around, the world has been solemnly cleansed. Upon viewing it, the mountain appears increasingly pale, while wild geese, startled at the edge of the clouds, fly across the sky." |
